"Marco Polo' s return from
the court of Kublai Chan along the silk road to Venice" . The title for
this piece was suggested to us by a visitor after a concert in
Münster. During "La Rotta' s return from the concert in Westphalia
along the motorroad to Solingen" we realized the significance of this
proposal.

Dry 'n' Dusty
heute schamhaft. In „Boleslav's Behmisch-Bock Blues Book“ (New
After an introduction on harp
we play a fast-pipe blues from the tradition of the Bohemian Bock
Blues. This style developed around 1900 in Louisiana when Bohemian
emigrants with their pipes ("Böhmischer Bock") met black blues
musicians and French Cajun-accordeonists.
Until today official
jazz-history books have bashfully avoided to mention this epoch. We
found "Dry ' n' Dusty" in "Boleslav' s Behmisch-Bock Blues Book" (New
Orleans / Praha, 1914) and arranged it for French bagpipe, xylophone,
accordeon and harp.

De Schief Töns - Silbermond am Rübenacker - Schnaps in the cups
Hubbelrath irische Folkbands umherzogen. Die beiden ersten Stücke
„De Schief Töns“ und „Silbermond am Rübenacker“
gehören zur Gattung der „Jeels“, „Schnaps in the cups"
hingegen ist ein echter „Rig“.
Three tunes from the vast
turnip plains along the Lower Rhine. Celtic influences are strong and
go back to old times when Irish folk-bands toured the villages between
Hückelhoven and Hubbelrath. The first two tunes belong to the
tradition of "jeels" , whereas "Schnaps in the cups" is a real "rig".

Turbo Lenzen
Klangeffekte.
We like to dedicate this tune
to our illustrator and friend Hans Georg Lenzen who provided us with
many beautiful sketches and pictures.
The hurdy-gurdy drone is tuned in a second ( g and a ). Thus, fascinating harmonic effects are created.

Rote Mazurka
Konzertreise in Finnland: endlose Straßen durch
melancholische Landschaften aus Birken, Wolken und Wasser, endlose Tage
von Mittag bis Mitternacht, blau-betrübte Augen-Blicke, teure,
traurige Trunksuchten, schwermütige Akkordeons und Geigen in Moll.
Eine Reminiszenz.
Concert trip in Finland:
endless roads through melancholy landscapes of birch trees, clouds and
water, endless days from noon to midnight, sad blue eyes, dear,
depressive drunkenness, grievous accordeons and fiddles in minor.
A reminiscence.

Francesco's Fantasy
„Donna, l'animo tuo pur fugge amore,
E gli occhi vaghi tuoi
Portan gli strai c'uccidon cu tu vuoi... “
This medieval poem was set to
music by Francesco Landini (1325-1397), a blind composer and harper, in
a two-part Ballata. His beautiful composition inspired us to
"Francesco' s Fantasy". The rattling sound of the harp is created by
little metal-hooks attached to the strings. In medieval times a more
percussive harp sound was quite popular.

„Theyr knightes blowan not the sakkys fawne“.
Inspiriert von dieser bemerkenswerten Zeile entstand unsere
Komposition.
hollerab-ta-ta“).
In the recently discovered
manuscript "Descriptio vitae et peregrinationum" of the Welsh monk
Ebriosus (12th century) from Clwyddllygydd Monastery the musical habits
of the Germans are described as follows:
"Theyr knightes blowan not the sakkys fawne".
Inspired by this remarkable
line we created our composition, which is stylistically a Rabtata. This
musical genre originates from Arab music ("el Hrab-ta" ) and spread to
Europe along the Bering Strait [sic] in the middle-ages. It has survived
until our times in some remote valleys of the Alps, notably in
yodelling songs of dairymaids near Appenzell ("hollerdi, hollerda,
hollerabtata").

Luxemburger Polka
On the farm of our
great-grand aunt in the Eifel region we discovered a little handwritten
music-book from around 1880. In it we found not only many Alpine tunes
but also this "Luxemburger Polka". We are now hoping for a breakthrough
into the "Top Ten" of the German Accordeon-and-Brdss-Band-Business.

A peaceful composition for harp without string orchestra and basso continuo.
