In „Al Maraya“spiegelt sich die alte spanische Tradition der jüdisch-sephardischen, arabischen und christlichen Musik in zeitgemäßen, lebendigen Interpretationen. So kommt das wahre Gesicht der europäischen Folk-Musik in all seiner Vielfalt und mit all seinen Facetten zum Vorschein.

Die Begegnung der Moderne mit Al Andaluz, dem alten Spanien, einer Wiege der europäischen Kultur, konfrontiert uns jedoch auch mit einer Zeit, als ein fruchtbares und friedliches Zusammenwirken der jüdischen, muslimischen und christlichen Religion und den verschiedenen Kulturen möglich war. Musiker aus Spanien, Marokko und Deutschland, allen voran die drei Sängerinnen Mara Aranda, Imam Al Kandoussi und Sigi Hausen verkörpern diese Vielfalt im Al Andaluz Project. „Al Maraya“, der Spiegel, zeigt also auch das, was uns verloren gegangen ist.

Dabei geht es dem Al Andaluz Project nicht um nostalgische Erinnerungen, sondern um gelebte Tradition. Die jüdisch-sephardische Musik etwa ist in Spanien nie ganz ausgestorben, sondern wurde seit dem Mittelalter von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben. Am Ende dieser Kette steht Al Andaluz Mitglied Aziz Samsaoui, aber auch die Deutschen Ernst Schwindl und Michael Popp.

Diese wiederum geben die Flamme ihrerseits weiter und führen das Al Andaluz Project so in völlig neue musikalische Gebiete. Auf "Al Maraya" ist erstmals ein indischer Tabla-Spieler und ein Pekussionist aus Russland zu hören. Das ist wahrer Kulturaustausch, der keine Grenzen kennt. Es ist schließlich was dran an der alten Weisheit: Im Spiegel des Anderen erkennen wir uns selbst.

In "Al Maraya" the old Spanish tradition of Jewish-Sephardic, Arabic and Christian music is reflected in contemporary, lively interpretations. This is how the true face of European folk music comes to the fore in all its diversity and with all its facets.

However, the encounter of modernity with Al Andaluz, the ancient Spain, a cradle of European culture, also confronts us with a time when a fruitful and peaceful interaction between the Jewish, Muslim and Christian religions and the different cultures was possible. Musicians from Spain, Morocco and Germany, above all the three singers Mara Aranda, Imam Al Kandoussi and Sigi Hausen embody this diversity in the Al Andaluz Project. "Al Maraya", the mirror, also shows what has been lost to us.

The Al Andaluz Project is not about nostalgic memories, but about a lived tradition. Jewish-Sephardic music, for example, has never been completely extinct in Spain, but has been passed on from generation to generation since the Middle Ages. At the end of this chain is Al Andaluz member Aziz Samsaoui, but also the German Ernst Schwindl and Michael Popp.

These, on the other hand, continue the flame and lead the Al Andaluz Project into entirely new musical areas.

On "Al Maraya", an Indian tabla player and a Russian percussionist can be heard for the first time. This is a true cultural exchange that knows no boundaries. Finally, there is something in the old wisdom: in the mirror of the other we recognize ourselves.
