Karácsony Milánóban, 1475
Milánó évszázadokon keresztül
Itália második legfontosabb városa volt,
vallásos és világi szempontból egyaránt. A Rómával kapcsolatot tartó,
A milánói rítus elsősorban a negyedik században
sikerült megőrizni a róla elnevezett ambrózián liturgia különállását.
megkülönböztethető a gregoriánétól: a szomszédos hangokra való lépések
gyakoribbak, több szekvenciális elem fordul elő, egyes dallamtöredékek
gyakrabban ismétlődnek, különböző a darabok modalitása, a műfajiság
nehezebben megragadható.
A város egyik legaktívabb reneszánsz hercege, Galeazzo Maria Sforza
(c.1450-1521),
néhány évig állt a Dóm szolgálatában. A motetták, melyeket ezen a CD-n
Ezek a
darabok egy-egy motetta sorozatot tartalmaznak, amelyben minden motetta
a mise valamelyik tételét hivatott helyettesíteni (beleértve az
ordináriumot és a propriumot is). A szubsztitúciós misék divatja
A szövegek a
kapcsolódnak szigorúan a mise részeihez.
Christmas in Milan, 1475
For centuries Milan was Italy's
second city in both sacred and secular
terms. Maintaining links with Rome but seeking to establish an identity
of its own, Milan developed its own rite in the first half of the
millennium which resembled the Roman in many ways. The rite combined
elements of Roman and Eastern liturgy. The Milanese rite owes its
present form to the 4th-century bishop Saint Ambrose, for not only was
his personal influence significant in the development of the rite, but
also the Ambrosian liturgy was able to maintain its independence for
centuries to come by reference to him. Fundamentally a conservative
city, Milan has preserved a repertoire older than the Gregorian.
Stylistically speaking it differs from the Gregorian chant in many
respects, i.e. moves to adjacent notes are more frequent and it
features many more sequential elements, certain melody fragments are
more frequently repeated, and the modal and generic qualities are
harder to establish.
Under one of the town's most prolific princes, Galeazzo Maria Sforza,
in the mid-15th century, sacred and secular music reached its greatest
splendour. The cathedral's cappella consisted, in addition to the
choirboys, of 22 first-rate singers including Josquin and Compčre. One
of the most famous musicians of his time, Josquin Desprez
(c.
1450-1521), was in the service of the cathedral for some years. The
motets performed on this recording count among his early works, indeed
he may well have composed them during his Milan years. The five-part
series takes as a cantus firmus the five antiphons of the vespers sung
on the festival of the Circumcision of Christ (New Year's Day). Each
motet is a true masterpiece.
The motet-cycle Ave Domine Jesu Christe by Loyset Compčre
(c.1445-1521) was probably composed during his stay in Milan, where the
composer of Franco-Flamish origin was a singer in the mid-1470s.
Compčre is known to have composed three substitution masses. Each work
consists of a series of motets; each motet is intended to replace a
liturgical mass movement (including the Ordinary and the Proper). The
history of substitution mass spans less than two decades, and the
practice was restricted to Milan. In total, eight such works are known.
Compčre's Christmas substitution mass, Missa de Domine Nostri
Jesu
Christe combines many different texts and fragments. The
motet-texts are connected by their relationship to the central concept,
and bear no relation to the ritual meaning of the mass.
