santos. San Pedro recurre a Santa María, que logra que vuelva a
vivir y cumpla lealmente sus votos.
2. CSM 42.
lugar.

THE CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARÍA OF ALFONSO X EL SABIO (THE WISE), 1221-1284
The
Cantigas de Santa María, contained in four 13th century parchment
codices, is considered to be medieval Spain's most important lyrical
work. Written in Galician-Portuguese there are four hundred and
twenty-seven poems that have been handed down to us with their
corresponding musical notation and extraordinary embellishments and
miniatures. They combine tales of miracles popular in the Middle Ages,
with praises to the Virgin Mary and are a testament to the Marian
devotion that developed in parallel to the construction of the Gothic
cathedrals.
When Eduardo Paniagua embarked on the recording of
the Cantigas de Alfonso X he organised the works according to different
criteria that give unity and personality to each recording. One
criterion is the geographical location of the stories that are told
according to the villages or Marian sanctuaries that were the scene of
these miracles.
The Cantigas are performed with all their original text.
When
Eduardo Paniagua founded Pneuma in Madrid in 1994 his intention was to
release previously unrecorded Spanish medieval music. The philosophy
behind Pneuma's recordings goes beyond the musical element in search of
the human and cultural background of the medieval works.
CANTIGAS OF GERMANY
This
recording includes stories and miracles in the Cantigas that feature
German protagonists or take place on German soil. The selection
complements the ones previously recorded in the Collection Cantigas de
Santa María de Alfonso X el Sabio on the Pneuma record label, which
includes different German references; the German pilgrims on their
pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela from Cantigas 175 and 218, included
in “El Camino de Santiago en las Cantigas” PN-680; the pregnant abbess
watched over by the Bishop of Cologne in Cantiga 7, and the minstrel
Pedro de Sigrar, near Cologne, in Cantiga 8, included in the “Cantigas de Francia” PN-520;
and the miracle of the fish, with a reference to
Germany, in Cantiga 386 about Puerto de Santa Maria in Cadiz, included
in the “Cantigas de
Sevilla” PN2-590.

bring him back to life to loyally fulfil his vows.

girlfriend, the Virgin appeared before him in a dream before he
consummated the union, scolding him for his disloyalty and making him
renounce his marriage, to devote his life to Her in a religious life in a
hermitage near a pine grove.

the fire and the sculpture of the angel remained in a position of
defence of the Virgin forever.

doubts about his faith just when he was consecrating the communion and
he asked the Virgin for her support. At the mass on Saturday he dropped
the host and while searching for it saw Holy Mary with Her Son in Her
arms and there was the wafer. Once the host was recovered he took it and
recovered his faith in the Eucharist.
