5. CSM 218. EL CIEGO DE ALEMANIA. “Razon an de seeren”
THE CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARÍA OF ALFONSO X THE WISE, 1221-1284
The Cantigas de Santa María,
contained in four 13th century parchment codices, are considered to be
medieval Spain's most important lyrical work. Written in
Galician-Portuguese there are four hundred and twenty-seven poems that
have been handed down to us with their corresponding musical notation
adorned with extraordinary miniatures. They combine tales of miracles
popular in the Middle Ages with praises to the Virgin Mary and are a
testament to the Marian devotion that developed in parallel to the
construction of the Gothic cathedrals.
The Cantigas are
considered to be Alfonso X's most personal work and although they came
from different sources and diverse collaborators a structured order is
evident. Since the songbook was first written in about 1260, the
presentation has always reflected the original personal verse and
coherent symbolic design. A late troubadour, Alfonso chooses the
tradition of "courtly love" as a way of giving his Lady the parchment
codices with the songs dedicated to her. The repertoire is
extraordinarily rich as its melodies are all different and original. The
formal structure of verses with a refrain makes them suitable for
popular participation. The miniatures of the Cantigas of Holy Mary
are a beautiful document in themselves, not only because of the
perfection of the drawing and colour, but also because of the
information that they give about daily life in the medieval Spain of the
Three Cultures - Christian, Arab and Jewish. They also have a great
iconographic value, as each group of ten Cantigas are accompanied by
numerous drawings of musical instruments. Scenes of chant and dance
appear in some of the - narrative which today constitute the principal
source for the reconstruction of both the instruments and the musical
atmosphere later included in the performance.
THE CANTIGAS OF THE ST. JAMES WAY
The
socio-spiritual event that is the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela
could not be omitted in the great collection of the miracles of the Cantigas.
The Virgin Mary and St. James collaborate to bring health and
forgiveness to repentant pilgrims. Although there are miracles in the Cantigas
that take place in Galicia they do not necessarily refer to the Way of
St. James. It is in Castile where the pilgrims experience these
adventures of such great impact on their lives. Except for the well
known miracles of the Hanged Pilgrim (Cantiga 175) and the great miracle of the pilgrim (Cantiga
26), the rest take place in the church of The White Virgin in
Villalcázar de Sirga. And as is logical in a Marian songbook, the Virgin
does for the pilgrims what other saints including St. James could not
do.
2. CSM 26. THE PILGRIM OF ST. JAMES
This
is one of the best-known tales of the St. James Way. In the 13th
century it was known as the "great miracle"and had a special feast day
in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. lt appears in the Liber Beati Jacobi
attributed to Anselm of Canterbury. A pilgrim was on his way to
Santiago when he sinned against chastity and the devil in the form of
Santiago appeared before him and told him that to save himself he had to
mutilate the organ with which he had sinned, and cut his throat. The
pilgrim did so in good faith and died. The real Santiago confronts the
devil who wants to take the pilgrim's soul. The Virgin as "advocate in
the Tribunal of Paradise" orders the resurrection of the pilgrim, but he
could never recover that of which he had been deprived.
3. CSM 313. DANGER AT SEA
After
three verses of praise to the virtues of the Virgin Mary "with great
pleasure and satisfaction" on the part of King Alfonso, this Cantiga
narrates how Holy Mary of Vilasirga saves a boat from the dangers of
the sea. A damaged boat sails on a tempestuous sea at night in the midst
of a storm. The anxious travellers invoke God and the saints, including
St. James and St. Nicholas, patron saint of seafarers, promising
pilgrimages to their sanctuaries if they are saved. Remembering the
healing miracles of Holy Mary of Vilasirga, a cleric invokes her with
prayers and especially the prayer Hail Holy Queen. Then a white dove
flies over the boat which is filled with light. The sea becomes calm and
the travellers eventually arrive at port in safety. The priest takes a
great chalice to the sanctuary of Vilasirga as a gift of gratitude from
the travellers.
4. CSM 268. THE FRENCH LADY IN VILA-SIRGA
A
deformed woman from France travelled in a cart with pilgrims to
different Sanctuaries. Listening to the pilgrims of St. James tell the
miracles of Vilasirga, she cried and prayed making pledges to the Virgin
so that she would cure her. She was then taken to Spain and to
Vilasirga, where she recovered her health before the altar. When she
returned to France she devoted her life to the Virgin Mary.
5. CSM 218. THE BLIND MAN FROM GERMANY
This
miracle was used as propaganda to attract pilgrims and show the
importance of Vilasirga over Compostela and the Virgin Mary over any
other Saint.
A rich merchant from Germany was ruined because of an
illness that left his hands and feet deformed. He joined a group of
pilgrims to Santiago who out of pity carried him on a stretcher. After
the difficult journey to Santiago, the merchant became blind and they
decided to leave him in Vilasirga. The Virgin Mary heard his sobs and
cries and cured him of all his ills. The man returned home and when he
had made some more money returned to Vilasirga to give it to the Virgin.
6. CSM 175. THE HANGED PILGRIM
This is the best known of the miracles of the St. James Way and took place in Toulouse in 1090. In the Liber Beati Jacobi
it is attributed to Calixtus II. A German pilgrim, follower of the
Virgin Mary, was travelling towards Santiago de Compostela with his son.
Near Rocamadour an evil and heretic innkeeper surreptitiously put a
silver cup into the son's bag. The son was reported and the crime
discovered resulting in a judge condemning him to be hanged before the
desolate father, who then continued his promised pilgrimage in tears.
Three months later on his way back, the father went to see his dead,
hanged son to discover that he was still alive because the Virgin Mary
had held him all that time in her hands. The people were indignant and
went to look for the heretic innkeeper who confessed and was burnt at
the stake.
7. CSM 278. THE BLIND PILGRIMS
This is another Cantiga
that shows the supremacy of the Virgin Mary of Vilasirga over St. James
of Compostela. A blind woman from France went on the pilgrimage to
Santiago to be cured but was not. On her way back she and her daughter
decided to rest in some huts in Carrion because it was raining very hard
and they took refuge before the altar of a church. The woman prayed
asking Holy Mary to cure her and She did so there and then. On her way
home she met another blind pilgrim and telling him her story she
recommended he went to Vilasirga. He also recovered his sight when he
prayed to the Virgin Mary.
8. CSM 253. THE IRON STAFF
When
a good French man from Toulouse confessed his sins he was told to make
the pilgrimage to Santiago as a penance, carrying an iron staff weighing
24 pounds. Performing his penance, he passed through Castile and in
Vilasirga went to the temple. When he asked the Virgin Mary for
forgiveness for his sins the staff miraculously broke in two before the
altar to the Virgin. Those present were amazed and saw that the pilgrim
could not move the pieces of the staff and when they heard the whole
story they understood that Holy Mary had freed him from the penance and
they sang the Hail Holy Queen. The man finished his pilgrimage to
Santiago and returned home.
